Born in Lisbon on 26 August 1974 and raised in Brandoa, Fernando Ribeiro is the founder, vocalist and principal lyricist of Moonspell. Since founding the band in 1989, he has become one of the defining voices of European heavy music, leading Portugal's most internationally acclaimed metal band through a career spanning more than three decades. His artistic vision—deeply rooted in literature, philosophy, history, mythology and the darker aspects of the human condition—has shaped Moonspell into one of the most distinctive and enduring acts of the gothic metal genre.

While studying Philosophy at the University of Lisbon, Fernando further developed the literary and philosophical interests that continue to inform his songwriting today. His lyrics have consistently reached beyond the conventions of heavy metal, drawing inspiration from poetry, symbolism, religion, folklore and history to create a body of work that has become synonymous with Moonspell's unique identity.

Alongside his career as a musician, Fernando has established himself as a respected writer, poet, editor and translator. His published works include the poetry collections Como Escavar um Abismo (2001), As Feridas Essenciais (2004) and Diálogo de Vultos (2007), later collected alongside new material in the anthology Purgatorial. He is also the author of the short-story collection Senhora Vingança (2011), as well as the novels Bairro Sem Saída and Café Kanimambo, further cementing his place among Portugal's contemporary literary voices.

His literary work extends beyond his own publications. Fernando translated Richard Matheson's landmark novel I Am Legend (Eu Sou a Lenda) into Portuguese, contributed to editions dedicated to H. P. Lovecraft, translated works by authors including Stefan Zweig, and has written essays, forewords and articles for books, newspapers and cultural publications. For many years he also authored The Eternal Spectator, a regular column in LOUD! magazine, sharing his perspectives on music, literature, cinema and culture. He later brought his passion for storytelling to Portuguese radio through O Baú dos Segredos, a long-running programme dedicated to music, books and the many hidden connections between them.

In 2017, Fernando founded ALMA MATER BOOKS & RECORDS, an independent publishing house and record label dedicated to literature, music and alternative culture. Conceived as a natural extension of his artistic philosophy, ALMA MATER has grown into an internationally respected platform, releasing music by artists such as Moonspell, Okkultist, Process of Guilt, Dawnrider, Ironsword, Desire, Daemonarch, The Troops of Doom and many others, while also publishing poetry, fiction, essays and collector's editions that celebrate underground culture and independent artistic expression.

Beyond Moonspell, Fernando has continually explored new creative territories through collaborations with musicians, writers and filmmakers. He has participated in projects such as Daemonarch and Amália Hoje, appeared as a guest vocalist on numerous international releases, lectured on literature and music, and remains an active ambassador for Portuguese culture both at home and abroad.

In recent years he has also embraced a new chapter as a DJ, curating carefully selected sets that reflect a lifetime devoted to music. Moving effortlessly between gothic rock, post-punk, darkwave, industrial, new wave, classic heavy metal and unexpected musical discoveries, his sessions reveal the eclectic influences that have shaped both his personal taste and Moonspell's artistic journey.

Whether through music, literature, publishing or the DJ booth, Fernando Ribeiro continues to pursue the same lifelong mission: to create meaningful connections between art and audience, remaining one of Portugal's most influential and multifaceted cultural figures while constantly exploring new ways to express the passions that first led him to the underground more than three decades ago.
